Diane & Hieu’s wedding consisted of a two day celebration that intertwined their Vietnamese heritage and a traditional Catholic ceremony. I was in awe of both of their days. This was my first Vietnamese wedding and I immersed myself by learning and reading all about their traditions and what each component meant to them and their families.
The Tea Ceremony
1. Groom’s Family Arrives (Lễ Rước Dâu) The groom and his family arrive at the bride’s home with ceremonial gifts. This marks the formal beginning of the wedding traditions and symbolizes the joining of two families.
2. Presentation of Gifts (Trao Mâm Quả) The groom’s family presents decorated trays of gifts to the bride’s family. These often include tea, fruit, cakes, wine, and other symbolic offerings. The gifts represent respect, gratitude, prosperity, and well wishes for the couple’s future.
3. Introduction Between Families Both families formally greet one another and introduce important family members. This moment represents the coming together and unity of two families.
4. The Tea Ceremony (Lễ Gia Tiên) The couple serves tea to their parents, grandparents, and elders. In return, they often receive advice, blessings, and sometimes jewelry or red envelopes. This is one of the most meaningful parts of the ceremony, symbolizing gratitude, respect, and honoring the generations before them.
5. Honoring Ancestors The couple may light incense and offer prayers at the family’s ancestral altar. This tradition honors ancestors and invites their blessings and guidance into the couple’s new life together.
6. Blessings and Gifts from Family Parents and elders offer their blessings to the newly married couple. Jewelry, especially gold, may be gifted as a symbol of love, prosperity, and wishes for a happy marriage.
Everyone was so welcoming and even helped my team and I get the best shots during important moments!! It was fun watching the “door games” that the groom and his groomsmen had to perform before Diane was guided in by her father. Laughter bounced off the walls by all their family and friends and I’m honored that I got to experience such a lighthearted and meaningful day!
The Wedding Day
I actually really loved that there were three different locations for their Dallas wedding. They each reflected them as a couple, family, faith, and joy and that feeling never left during their day. The morning began with the bridal and groom’s party getting ready in different areas of their home, the mood was energetic but also relaxing before the hustle and bustle began.
Everything came together once we arrived at their church. The bride and groom shared moments with their parents before they finally had their first look with each other. I love to stand back and watch from afar as my couples exchange vows, not only to give as much privacy as possible but to also not let my emotions get the best of me!! Weddings always make me emotional what can I say. Their traditional Catholic ceremony was beautiful and I loved capturing their family and friends participating throughout. Then it was time to party!!
The vibes were immaculate. From the colors, the excitement, to the lights and music, everyone was ready to have the best time celebrating Diane & Hieu!! Introductions began and first dances commenced! After dinner there was a traditional Lion Dance for the bride and groom and then they started Chào bàn! This is the portion where the bride and groom go to each table and personally greet family and friends! I LOVED this. Getting to witness everyone living in the moment and having fun with the bride and groom created these organic moments that you could feel through the photos. Last but not least there was the dancing and personal gifts being thrown into the crowd instead of the traditional flower toss! EVERYONE got into it!!
I look back and wish I could relive their days again and again. I really enjoyed incorporating digital and 35mm film through all of their moments, I feel like it really shows off the textures of every element.
